An estimated 175,000 people sprain their ankles in the United States every week. That's a lot of peoplesuffering with ankle pain.
A decoction of willow bark and gotu kola can be useful topically as well. Dip a cloth into the liquid once it is cool enough to touch. Wrap this around the joint, then wrap plastic around that to keep the heat in. You can use trash bags, plastic grocery bags or plastic wrap to do this.

Sprained ankles are fairly common and cause sufferers a lot of pain, even more so that an actual break. Totreat a sprain, doctors will prescribe 'RICE'. No, not the stuff you eat. In this case RICE means:
Rest - and give your ankle a chance to heal.
Ice Compression - use cold compresses to reduce inflammation and pain.
Elevation - keep the leg raised to lessen swelling and pain.

Take some tablets of relief. If your ankle really hurts, consider easing the pain with an over-the-counter non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen. Follow the directions on the product label. But do not ignore lingering pain or try to cover it up with over-the-counter painkillers. You need to be aware of pain to keep from reinjuring vulnerable muscles or tendons.

Damage to the ligaments in your ankle will cause the ankle to swell, sometimes dramatically. What treatment is used depends on the severity of the sprain. Minor injuries can be treated at home with home remedies, but severe sprains will require medical help.
